Stand with Us Against Hate – Read and Share Our Statement

9 Aug 2024

Like so many others, we were horrified at the prospect of far-right violence blighting our district this week. That this did not materialise is thanks to the swift and measured response of Kent Police, and the resolute refusal of our community to let hate win.

The far-right extremists who exploited the tragedy in Southport to incite acts of violence do not speak for Britain or our values. Already, we have seen some of the best of those values in action across the country: Communities coming together to clean up damage, standing with neighbours who have been targeted, and making it clear that hatred will never divide us.

Racism and Islamophobia have no place in our society, and we must work together to consign them to the history books. While there is much to be done to ensure that everybody can feel safe in their communities, there is hope. On Wednesday, we saw thousands of people across the country standing peacefully together against racism, Islamophobia and violence - proof that the UK is the open, tolerant and compassionate country we know - the country we want it to be.

We remain committed to working within our communities to help those who feel threatened, and to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society. As well as continuing to work with community groups, we extend an open invitation to any residents affected by the recent abhorrent rhetoric and violence, or who have concerns about community safety, to contact the police and your local councillors. You are not alone, and we will always stand with you.

Signed,

Your Canterbury & Coastal Liberal Democrat Councillors
